Meditation in Four Steps

The Basics of Meditation in Four Simple Steps

By Donna Marie Holistic & Spiritual Wellbeing

Hello Lovelies

Meditation is one of the most gentle yet powerful ways to ease stress and calm the mind. When life feels overwhelming and our thoughts are all over the place, it can be really hard to find peace. That’s where meditation comes in. It doesn’t require any fancy equipment or expensive tools—just your mind and a little time to slow down.

It’s important to remember: meditation isn’t something you master overnight. You probably won’t feel totally calm the first time you try it—and that’s okay. Like anything else, it gets easier (and more rewarding) with practice. The key is to keep showing up for yourself.

Here are four simple steps to help you get started:

1. Find a Quiet Space
When you’re just beginning, distractions can really get in the way. Even small background noises can pull your focus when your eyes are closed and your other senses become more alert. Try to find a quiet spot where you won’t be interrupted. Close windows, switch off your phone, and if you live with others, kindly ask them to keep noise to a minimum while you take this time for yourself.

2. Get Comfortable (But Not Too Comfortable!)
Lying down might seem tempting, but it often leads to falling asleep—especially if your body relaxes deeply. Instead, try sitting upright in a comfortable position. You can sit cross-legged on the floor or upright in a chair, whatever feels best for your body. Keep your spine straight and let your hands rest gently on your lap or by your sides.

3. Start with Your Breath
One of the easiest ways to anchor your mind is through your breath. Inhale gently through your nose, and exhale slowly through your mouth. Let your breath settle into a natural rhythm, something soft and steady. This helps calm your nervous system and gives your mind something to gently return to when it starts to wander (which it will—and that’s completely normal).

4. Let Your Thoughts Come and Go
As you settle in, thoughts will come—random ones, emotional ones, even things you forgot you were thinking about. Don’t fight them, and don’t try to block them out. Instead, just notice them, like clouds passing in the sky. Acknowledge each thought and then gently return to your breath. Over time, these thoughts will begin to quiet down, and you might notice a stillness or spaciousness in your mind. That’s the sweet spot.

In that space, you may find clarity, peace, or even insight into something you’ve been struggling with. And even if you don’t, just giving yourself this time to pause is powerful in itself.

With practice, meditation becomes less about “doing it right” and more about simply being—with yourself, your breath, and your present moment.
